Which format should you choose for your goal?

Picking an output format becomes easy when you start from the goal. If you want to send a photo to someone, JPG is the safest choice because every phone, computer and messaging app opens it. If you plan to edit a picture many times, PNG avoids extra compression and keeps transparent areas. If you run a website and care about speed, WebP and AVIF produce smaller files than JPG and PNG in many cases. For documents and forms, PDF keeps pages together, and for logos that must scale without blurring, SVG is the right answer.

Settings explained

• Quality controls how much detail lossy formats keep. Higher values mean larger, cleaner files.
• Max width (optional) resizes the picture and is the fastest way to cut file size.
• Background for transparent areas sets the fill color when you convert to a format without transparency, such as JPG or BMP.
• PDF page size lets you choose Same as image, A4 or US Letter, and Merge all images into one PDF builds a single document.
• Colors in SVG decides how detailed a traced vector will be.

Browser conversion versus server conversion

Most conversions happen inside your own browser, so the files never leave your device. A few professional formats, such as PSD, RAW camera files and animated GIF or WebP, are too complex for a browser and are processed on the server. Those files are uploaded, converted and deleted immediately after conversion. Either way you do not need an account.

Tips for cleaner conversions

• Start from the highest quality original you have, because converting cannot restore lost detail.
• Keep a lossless master such as PNG or the original photo, and export smaller copies for sharing.
• Test two quality values on one image before you convert a large batch.
• Check transparent images on both a light and a dark background.
